A little history

The trench coat was born in the trenches of the First World War, where British officers needed a coat lighter than wool greatcoats that would still keep out wind and rain. Burberry and Aquascutum both claim to have invented it. Its details all had a purpose: the shoulder straps held equipment and showed rank, the storm flap protected the chest, and legend has it that the metal rings on the belt were used to hang grenades — in reality, rather map cases and gear. Hollywood then did the rest, from Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca to every detective in film noir.

• Double-breasted and long: it falls below the knee
• Raglan sleeves, the traditional trench construction, with buckled cuff straps
• Belt with buckle, to tie at the waist or leave loose
• Storm flap and shoulder straps
• Four pockets: two outside, two inside
• Metal hardware inspired by the original military coats
• Single vent at the back
• Collar to wear up against the wind or folded down

Care

• Dry clean only
• Brush or spot clean between cleanings
• Hang on a wide hanger to keep the shoulders in shape

How to wear it

• Office: buttoned over a navy suit.
• Weekend: open over a grey crewneck, dark jeans and white sneakers.
• Layered: over LA Veste or a fine-knit sweater, with loafers.

Size & fit
